Also, this grey feels pretty different from the black to my eyes.

Re: Image Dump (Caution Lots of Images) Black on white is the easier on your eyes, but you can get eyestrain from that too. It differs from person to person, the lower contrast the better, though you need some baseline contrast so you can still read it.
