It's the quest where

I actually didn't like it because I think I missed out. I either persuaded or intimidated everybody and did t do any of the tasks, so I skipped all the fun bits by accident.

Why doesn't one just side with the empire in the beginning and just kill the emperor?

Apparently you can get married (lol), I'm playing a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Dark Brotherhood assassin so I got married with that bloodcrazy Dark Elf from Whiterun.
The wedding ceremony was obviously hilariously bugged, like any other important event in any TES game. She ran off while the priest was still talking. Apparentlyt she decided that running on foot from Riften back to Whiterun was a good idea

Useless (and bugged) features like that is what makes me love TES.

I bought the house in Whiterun, had a wife living in there, Lydia was waiting in there, and all my possessions, including priceless artifacts of history and power, sat in a wooden chest upstairs.

The Bannered Mare in Whiterun. You'll have to be a certain level I think. He's at the bar and will talk to you as you run by.
Be sure to actually do every quest and not intimidate/pursuade your way out of them. :P

...and that's why I like to stash all my loot (Lydia included) in an empty, out-of-the-way hideout. Septimus Signus' outpost and the witch hut east of Riverwood are my favourites.

Why does everyone use Lydia when there are tons of other more competent, interesting and even pretty (if you're into that) companions easily available in Skyrim?

Why does everyone use companions at all? They only slow you down and don't help much at all.
