The tank near Central Command stops, about to fire, until realizing that under water, it would be completely ineffective. Far to the east, the walker continues its trek, while the gyrocopter flies further ahead, and something just about peaks over the edge. "Mother of god..."
The strange black mass comes into view - radioing in to Central Command, the copter is given instructions to fly low, above the strange zone, and try to communicate with whatever is there. If it attacks, the walker - the only military unit capable of underwater combat, aside from Command itself - is to open fire upon the target being in sight.

A thunderous sound of gunfire is heard (well, to their little ears. To anybody else, it probably sounds like popcorn popping, with the occasional M-80 going off). Towards the back, several troops stay behind, ready to aid in evacuation. Two soldiers, armed with grenade launchers, fire. They arch their shots in an attempt to hit the sphere inside the pit, without having to risk actually touching or getting close to the strange material.
The tank's main cannon is yet to fire, but a soldier mans the gun atop, providing suppressing fire along with the half a dozen or so other men who are closer to the front line. In this case, they're just trying to stop the spread of this hellish material.

NOTE: The two-pixels-diagonal blocks with contrails behind them are both HE grenades that will hit somewhere in the pit, but not necessarily directly on the hood. The darker pixels are bullets from the HMG atop the tank, while the lighter ones are from ground troops.

Where are those rounds you speak of?

You'd only see them clearly if it was at least zoomed x2 (aside from the grenades). You can barely see the grenades above the tank, and then the rest of the rounds are all in the same area to the left of the tank.
EDIT: Oh, and I need to remember to add muzzle flashes to the tank's guns - I figure the ground troops aren't using heavy enough weaponry to necessitate any yet, though.
