MapTool

== MapTool B3 ==

A quick application made for making maps with icons, which can be dragged around. The idea was to make a tool for all those making maps for their forum games.

It isn't like your average image editor. The best way to describe it is probably as an "object-based image editor."

More tools and updates coming at some point.

Ooh, shiny! I might just use this, if I end up deciding not to make my next RtD tile-based.

Downloading.

Update - Definitely like this. It's really simple and the way it works is great for if you have to move characters around on your map each turn, since you can just grab and drag them.
If you could implement a simple image editor that pops up on the side so that you can change the look of objects, or create new ones without opening up another program, it would be just great.

Build 3 is out, and it comes with new features.

Now if you double-click a list entry, you can rename it. This is nice for making things a bit clearer when going through the list.

If you're wanting to place the icons with precision, you can move them with the NumPad arrow keys. That is, as long as Num Lock is on. If Num Lock isn't on, it cycles through the list instead.

Though this feature isn't new, it went unmentioned before. Similar to CC, MapTool treats the color 255,0,255 to be transparent. This means your icons don't have to be squares!

Also, I found clicking on icons to select them to be a bit funny, as if you miss the icon, the currently selected icon zips over to your cursor. If you want to avoid this mistake, you can now select icons by right-clicking, in addition to how you could before, left-clicking or using the list.

How is this any different or better from copying and pasting with MS Paint?

Less pressing buttons, more dragging and dropping.

Just much easier in general. With MSPaint it tends to get messy when you have a bunch of objects you need to move.

To sum up the difference between this and MS Paint for making maps:

You don't have to cut, paste, and clean up the old spot in order to move things. That's all handled for you.

It's sort of like having each map icon on a different layer so you can just move them around.
Although you can do the same thing in Photoshop or other fully featured image editors, MapTool is ridiculously simple. (And won't eat up huge amounts of ram, or crash on you... probably. Just let me know if it does.)
