Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch
Old-school styled JRPG blending real-time action and turn-based combat elements with gorgeous aesthetics and an uncomplicated but easy to enjoy story and main character. Haven't personally had a chance to play it but it's getting shining critical reviews all 'round from what I can tell, so discuss.
I've played it, and it's basically a real-time Pokemon game, but without the Pokemon.

How do you like it so far? Is it just a decent JRPG that's been overhyped for standing out in a barren sea of crappy titles, or is there something special about it that would make it stand out even during the prime of RPG releases?

It's being co-produced by Studio Ghibli. While the gameplay is by Level-5, all the character designs, lushly animated cutscenes, and the soundtrack (composed by the Joe Hisaishi) are all pure Ghibli. If you've watched their movies, you know what's coming.

I hear it's out on PSN. So far from what I hear, very likely I'm getting this game.

So far, I have enjoyed it more than the average JRPG. The artstyle, as expected, is unique, and the combat is different enough to keep it from getting too boring. If you're a fan of RPGs in general, or find the art style to be nice, I recommend at least trying out the demo.

Are the characters annoying? I couldn't even play Blue Dragon because I hated each and every character so much.

Probably not annoying idiots then. If I had a PSwhatever I'd probably buy this.

I remember hearing about this a while ago and looking forward to it. Pretty much any story Studio Ghibli touches turns to gold.
Interesting that it's slightly similar to Pokemon. It'll be fun to play a good game with monster training/combat elements, that isn't aimed at young audiences, and actually has substantive plot.

Ah, Blue Dragon. I remembered something about that game grated on my nerves.

I've been wanting to play this (and it's counterpart) since it was announced. Unfortunate lack of consoles is unfortunate. :/
